[Summary] Odontogenic tumors (OTs) have various origins, most of which develop directly from the remnants of odontogenic epithelium left after completion of dental development and can be considered as a special type of tumor in oral and maxillofacial region. The incidence of OTs is high, accounting for 6% of all oral and maxillofacial neoplasms. Criteria of diagnosis and treatment is critical for successful management of OTs and improvement of the patients' quality of life. A guideline of OTs diagnosis and treatment, which refers to the World Health Organization classification of tumors of the head and neck in 2005 and the currently available clinical researches and evidences was formulated by Division of Surgical Oncology, Chinese Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Chinese Stomatological Association. The purpose is to standardize the diagnosis and treatment of OTs. This guideline will be updated according to the latest advancement both in basic and clinical researches.
